Back Pain Treatment in Glasgow
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek osteopathic care. It can begin suddenly after lifting, twisting or sport, or develop gradually from long hours at a desk. Whatever the cause, ongoing discomfort can affect work, sleep and everyday movement.
At Glasgow Osteopaths, we assess and treat back pain from our clinics in Glasgow city centre, Paisley and Lenzie. Our approach is hands-on, evidence-informed and tailored to the individual.

What Causes Back Pain?
Most back pain is mechanical, meaning it relates to joints, muscles and ligaments rather than a serious underlying condition. It often builds up over time, then flares after a particular movement or strain.
- Lifting or bending awkwardly
- Prolonged sitting or desk work
- Sudden twisting movements
- Sports strain or overdoing activity
If pain travels into the buttock or leg, this may suggest nerve irritation. See our Sciatica treatment page.
Common Causes of Back Pain
While many episodes of back pain settle within a few weeks, recurring or persistent discomfort is often linked to underlying joint stiffness, muscle imbalance or reduced spinal mobility.
We commonly see back pain associated with:
- Reduced core stability
- Repetitive physical work
- Long periods of driving
- Previous injury that has not fully resolved
- Periods of reduced activity followed by sudden exertion
Understanding the contributing factors is an important part of building a treatment plan that supports recovery and helps reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
How Osteopathy Can Help With Back Pain
Osteopathy aims to improve how your back moves and functions, while addressing the mechanical stresses contributing to pain. Each appointment begins with a detailed medical history and physical assessment to understand your specific presentation.
Treatment may include:
- Gentle joint mobilisation
- Soft tissue techniques to reduce muscle tension
- Muscle energy techniques to improve restricted movement
- Advice on safer bending, lifting and posture
- Targeted exercises to support recovery
The approach is individual. Some people experience relatively quick improvement, while longer-standing or recurrent problems may require a phased plan.
If tendon-related symptoms are contributing to your pain, we may also discuss whether Shockwave Therapy is appropriate.
What to Expect at Your Back Pain Appointment
Your first appointment involves a thorough assessment. You may be asked to remove some outer clothing and perform simple movements so we can evaluate spinal mobility, muscle balance and areas of strain.
We consider this alongside lifestyle factors such as work, sport and day-to-day activity. This allows us to determine a suitable treatment plan tailored to you.
We are recognised by Aviva, Bupa, Vitality and AXA PPP. You can find full details of appointment length and pricing on our Fees & Offers page.
When Back Pain Needs Urgent Medical Advice
Most back pain is mechanical and responds well to appropriate care. However, urgent medical assessment is required if you experience:
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Progressive leg weakness
- Numbness in the saddle area
- Severe trauma
If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek urgent medical advice by contacting your GP, calling NHS 111 or attending A&E.
